Mental Health Diversion
Mental health diversion in Hong Kong refers to a program or process designed to divert individuals with mental health problems from the criminal justice system to appropriate mental health treatment and support. The goal is to address the underlying mental health needs of individuals involved in the legal system, rather than focusing solely on punishment.
Instead of incarceration or traditional criminal punishment, psychologists identify individuals with mental health issues who come into contact with the legal system and provide them with alternatives, such as treatment, counseling, or community support.
The Mental Health Diversion Program is designed to meet the unique needs of individuals with mental health issues and recognizes that their behavior may be affected by their mental health condition. By diverting individuals to appropriate mental health services, the program aims to promote recovery, reduce recidivism, and improve overall outcomes for individuals and the community.
